The obituary was published in 2 parts in the Vinton Eagle, Vinton, Iowa.

Wednesday, August 11, 1875 "Suicide - Mr. Wm. Hardesty, of Polk Township, who some weeks ago attempted to commit suicide while laboring under partial insanity, succeeded in taking his life last Sunday morning, using a razor for the purpose. He arose early and went out; not returning for considerable time, search was made, and his lifeless body was found in the barn with the throat cut from ear to ear. Mr. Hardesty was about fifty years of age, having a large family. Financially he was quite beyond the reach of possible want, as we are informed; yet it seems to have been his constant dread lest poverty should overtake himself and his family."
