Solomon Sleeper

Notes by Avi Bick: According to notes by Sid Martell from the 1980s, Shloime Schlipak, son of Shmuel, changed his name to Sol Sleeper. The notes also include names of family members which are consistent with documents mentioned below. The following documents (except for Detroit Jewish News) can be obtained from Ancestry.com. There are some inconsistencies in dates.

• The passenger list of the vessel Kursk, arriving to New York on 8 Jul 1912, included Schleime Schlipak, born 1894 in Russia.

• There is “declaration of intention” (form 2203, US Dept of Labor, Naturalization Service) made by Sol Shleepock on 3 Nov 1921. He is listed as being born in Bereznica, Poland on 15 Jul 1895, arriving to New York on the vessel Kursk on Jul 4 1912.

• Also, there is a petition from 16 mar 1927, for Schleime Schlipak, also listed as “Solomon Sleeper, same as Solomon Shleepock”, born on 15 Feb 1895 in Bereinitza, Volyn, Poland, arriving to New York on 8 Jul 1912. His wife Rebecca was born in June 1902 in Plotnitza, Poland. His daughter Shirley was born on May 23, 1923.

• The 1930 US Census included an entry for the following family in Detroit: Solomon Sleeper (Head, born 1898 in Poland, immigrated in 1914), Rebecca Sleeper (wife, born in 1904 in Poland), Shirly Sleeper (daughter, age 7), Ailine Sleeper (daughter, 6 ), Florence Sleeper (daughter, 2)

• In 1942 in the WW2 Draft Registration Card, Solomon Sleeper from Detroit is listed as being born on 15 Jan 1895 in Bereznitz, Poland.

• In the Michigan, Death Index: Solomon Sleeper. Birth Date:13 Jan 1895, Death Date:24 Mar 1974

• From Detroit Jewish News Archive, from March 29, 1974: SOLOMON SLEEPER, 23681 Wildwood, Oak Park, died March 24. Survived by two daughters, Mrs. Shirley Molodofsky and Mrs. Sheldon (Florence) Schwartz; one sister and seven grand-children
