JUSTICE S C SMITH SUCCUMBS
People throughout this section were saddened by the death Monday of Judge Solomon Cornelius Smith, 80 years of age, who died at his home after a period of ill health due to his age.
Judge Smith was the last surviving charter member of the Sherrard Byrd Masonic Lodge, having been a member of that order for 58 years. Judge Smith has been a familiar figure in town and about the courthouse for better than a century.
Born January 25, 1864, Judge Smith was the son of James P. "Poplar Jim" Smith for whom the town of Poplarville was named. His mother was Mrs. Mary Strahan Smith. Judge Smith was married 57 years ago to Miss Rosie Abney, daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. H. C. Abney. Dr. Abney was one of the pioneer doctors in this section.
Judge Smith was known and loved by practically every citizen of the county. He has served almost continually as Justice of the Peace of Beat One for the past 35 years. Prior to his being elected to this office, Judge Smith served as mayor of the town of Poplarville, marshall of the town and as deputy sheriff of Pearl River county. Funeral services were conducted at the First Baptist church, of which he was a member. Rev. James T. Horton, his pastor, was in charge of the services, assisted by Rev. S. F. Harkey, pastor of the Poplarville Methodist church. Interment was in the Poplarville cemetery with Masonic honors under the direction of Leopold Locke. McDonald Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Pall bearers were W. W. Gentry, Robert McWilliams, J. O. Roberton, E. B. Strain, Pat Hyde and Jesse White.

Mohawk, Hattiesburg, Mrs. Elsie Hall, Poplarville, Blake M. Smith, San Francisco, Calif., Mrs. W. J. Carson, Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Miss Sara Wilda Smith, Poplarville.
