About Sophia Berentsen

She was my Nana...great grandmother. I really liked her. She had a, very young outlook on life. She sure did live a full life, as you can tell from all the husbands! My earliest memories of her were visiting her in Tacoma Washington. That was where she lived for quite a few years. She was not married to Mr. Berentsen at that time. I don't know whether he had passed on, or just left. This was in the early sixties. Duncan McCuaig was still in the picture though. He remained friends with her even though they were not married anymore. I thought he was my Uncle! I didn't know all the dynamics then. I really liked him, I remember that. He was a really nice man, always fixing something around her house. Nana was a terrible cook....sorry Nana but it was true. I remember getting food poisoning from some beef stroganoff that she cooked for us. LOL Needless to say it took MANY years for me to try it again. Nana used to let me have half of her beer when I was of course I thought that was great! I even remember the glass that she used to give me the beer in. It was such a treat. Every birthday or Christmas she would give me a dollar, or "days of the week" underpants (always one or two sizes too small) (because I was a chubby kid) It was kind of the family joke. Then I remember her giving me the album "Bridge over Troubled Water" by Simon and Garfunkel. This was TOTALLY current. She blew me away that year. I wish I had more facts from her early life. I wish I had asked more questions as a kid....I know she was the best seamstress you could ever want. She used to make some beautiful dresses for me when I was little, all hand smocked on the top. In her later years she moved up to Vancouver and lived with Stan and his wife and sister in law. They built an addition on to their little house for her, and treated her like a Queen.
