[Theunis Hercxen, j.m, Van de Armen bouwerye, en Sophia Hendricks, j.d. Uyt de Esopus.]
The initials j.m and j.d. in the church record indicate that Theunis was a "young master" and Sophia a "young miss" meaning that neither had been previously married.
Theunis was the first child of his family to be born at the Arme Bowery, which was located on Long Island, across the East River from Manhattan, north of Newtown Creek. In 1654, his parents moved there with his five older siblings, to the settlement called "Nieuwe Stad" which was the name for the Dutch and British settlement in what is now Elmhurst, Queens.
Before the nineteenth century urbanization and industrialization of the surrounding neighborhoods, Newtown Creek was a longer and shallower tidal waterway, wide enough that it contained islands. It drained parts of what are now the neighborhoods of Bushwick, Williamsburg, and Greenpoint in Brooklyn; and Maspeth, Ridgewood, Sunnyside, and Long Island City in Queens.
Theunis and Sophia lived at the Arme Bouwery until shortly before 1695 when they settled in Ryck's Patent, later moving to Philipsburgh where Theunis died in the fall of 1709. Sophia Hendricksen died aft 4 Dec 1725. Marrriage
