About Spencer Dillard Mitchell
MITCHELL, Spencer Dillard – Pvt/1stLT Co I 16th TN Infantry CSA Born 23 March 1837 in Sparta, White County, TN, one of four children of Joseph Gould Mitchell of White County, TN and Nancy Ann Taylor of GA/VA. The detailed soldier record shows Spencer D. Mitchell in the 16th TN Infantry which was organized in June of 1861 at Camp Harris, TN. The unit was active in Lee's Cheat Mountain Campaign and later moved to SC, GA, AL, MS, then to KY. At the battle of Chickamauga, 28% were disabled. The unit surrendered on April 26, 1865. On 6 Feb 1861 in White County, Spencer was married to Emily H. Hickey, born 1841. She was the daughter of Joshua Hickey of East TN and Elizabeth Sherill/Sherrill of TN. Emily was the granddaughter of James Hickey, Revolutionary War soldier who is buried in Old Giles Elrod Cemetery in White County. Emily is also the Great-great granddaughter of William Sherrill of Devonshire, England. Emily ies prior to 1865; her death date and burial site are unknown. She had a brother, George W. Hickey, who served the CAS as a Pvt in Co A 25th Infantry of TN. On 7 July 1865 in White County, Dillard Mitchell married Mariah Lowry. She was the daughter of Woodson Phillips White of Amelia County, VA and Nancy "Nannie" Mitchell of TN and the widow of Vance Carrick Lowry/Lowery by whom she had one daughter, Flora, born in 1853. Mariah was also the granddaughter of Revolutionary War Soldier, John White, Sr. who served in Fifer Sanford's Co 2nd Virginia during the War. Spencer Dillard or S.D. as he was known and Mariah moved to Texas in 1874 settling in the Lancaster area of Dallas County. S.D. mad a living as a farmer. They became the parents of two sons. On 2 August 1903 S.D. died at his home west of Lancaster. He has a single flat tombstone marker with FATHER on it.
