About Staff Sergeant Guido DeSalvo
Guido DeSalvo, 92 of Smithfield, passed away peacefully after a brief illness. He is survived by his wife Frances (Dailey) DeSalvo who he was married to for 61 years.
Born in Blackstone, Massachusetts, he was a son of the late Cesare and Ursula (Pietranduano) DeSalvo. He had lived in North Providence, RI for 44 years prior to opening the Smithfield Driving Range & Pro-Shop in Smithfield where he lived since 1967. The business was renowned in the New England area for 48 years serving many generations.
Guido was a Staff Sgt in the U.S. Army Air Corp. He was in the Eighth Air Force 447th Bombardment Group stationed in Rattlesden, England as a B-17 waist gunner. His plane was shot down in May 1944 and was a prisoner of war at Stalag Luft,IV in Germany for thirteen months. He received the Bronze Star and Purple Heart for his service.
He was dedicated to the game of golf from his youth as a caddy at the Louisquisset Golf Course in North Providence until his last years of being a member of Kapalua Country Club in Hawaii where he vacationed. During his years in business he donated to many charities that frequented his business.
He is also survived by his sister Ida O’Donnell, niece, Joanna Ciliberto, nephew Paul Gale and great-nephew John Piluso. He was the brother of the late John, Andrew, Alphonse, Sylvio, Arthur and Romilda DeSalvo and Aldia Sanita
