About Stan Lee
Stan Lee (born Stanley Martin Lieber; December 28, 1922) is an American comic book writer, editor, actor, producer, publisher, television personality, and the former president and chairman of Marvel Comics. During his stint at Timely Comics, the precursor to Marvel Comics, he served in World War II and rose to the rank of Sargent. He later married Joan Booncock Lee and had two children, one of whom died.
In collaboration with several artists, most notably Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, he created Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, the Avengers, Iron Man, the Hulk, Thor, Daredevil, Doctor Strange, and many other fictional characters, introducing complex, naturalistic characters and a thoroughly shared universe into superhero comic books. In addition, he headed the first major successful challenge to the industry's censorship organization, the Comics Code Authority, and forced it to reform its policies. Lee subsequently led the expansion of Marvel Comics from a small division of a publishing house to a large multimedia corporation.
Lee became famous for introducing the "Marvel Method" of writing where the writer and artist would work side by side to come up with complex characters with faults and foibles. These characters would spring to life on the page and appear to be all too human. It didn't matter if it was a heroic hero or a dastardly villain, the characters became deep and written in a way that had never been seen before.
He was inducted into the comic book industry's Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame in 1994 and the Jack Kirby Hall of Fame in 1995.
Stan has also set up the Stan Lee Foundation which promotes literacy and writing all around the world. He has also had cameos in several films and television shows based on his creations and some who weren't. He revolutionized the comic industry at a time where McCarthyism really did a number on the genre. Now he is known the world over for ushering in the Marvel Age of Comics and bringing to life countless memorable characters!
