US Patent Office records for Patent No. 438621. Filing date: Sep 27, 1889. Issue date: Oct 21, 1890: "[Inventor] William A. Hall, of Bellows Falls, assignor of one-half to Starks Edson, of Saxton's River, Vermont."
In the principal patent document William A. Hall asserts that he has invented, "a paint that does not scale off or crack; further, one that does not contain oil — hence very cheaply made — and, lastly, one which furnishes a coating or finish highly fire-proof and very lasting."
The document does not reveal the reason for Hass's assigning one half of the credit for this invention.
