Sonoraville, Gordon County, Georgia, USAIn July 1862 Starling volunteered for service in the Confederate Army in Atlanta and served three years in Capt. Whaley's Company, Lawton's Regiment, Forrest's Brigade (Calvalry). He was wounded in the arm during a skirmish in one of Gen. Forrst's raids on Mill Creek in Tenn. On Dec. 28, 1898 he applied for a soldier's pension in Gordon County, and stated that because of this injury his arm was practically useless. The ball entered the right elbow, lodged in the joint and was never removed.
