About Stefina Petronella Basson

"Stefina Petronella Basson was the youngest daughter of Veldkornet JP Meyer of the farm Klipriviersberg. The second photo indicates the position of the graveyard about 200 to 300 meters from the Clubhouse of the Glenvista Country Club Estate. The photo is taken from from east to west. Insidently, Glenvista Country Club Estate renovated/changed their farmhouse to what it looks like today – the Clubhouse.

I had the privilege to meet her youngest child and only daughter, also Stefina Petronelle or Finnie. Had an interview with her in 1990. At that stage she was in her early eighties. Stayed in Houghton on a beautiful, should I say estate, with her own driver to take her wherever she wanted to be. One thing I remembered was that she told me in 1914 they would sit on her grandfathers stoep on Klipriviersberg (JP Meyer) and they could only see the lights of old Alberton vagely in the east. How open and uninhabited was that part of Alberton then. Wish I could have lived then!

After her mother died the farm was divided amongst the four children. It was too small for farming purposes and they (she had three brother) decided to establish a township on their parts of the farm. It became too costly and they sold their land to a development company named Glenn Allen or the other way round - can’t remember, and other developers. That was in the 1970s. She and her husband, Mr Acroid, then bought the estate in Houghton. To visit her I took die M1 north past Killarny offramp and take the 14th avenue offramp. Her brothers disappeared from the south. All passed on."
