Faan, also known as Steph Griesel, was a teacher who eventually turned to farming. He got married to Johanna (Joey) Grobbelaar in 1914. They were married for more than 10 years when their only daughter, Miranda, was born on 25 August 1925. She was about one month old when Faan died during an appendix operation.
