He traveled to GA. several times before 1800 and returned to Granville Co. N.C. In , 1801 Stephen was appointed guardian of his young sister-in-law, Frances Knott, in Granville Co., NC. He participated in the Georgia Land Lottery of 1821 and drew land in Henry and Monroe Co. On 15 June 1822 a certain Daniel Hightower gave an unspecified number of "slaves" to Stephen.
