Descendants of Nicholas Cady of Watertown, Mass. 1645-1910

Stephen 3 Cady, (Capt. Joseph 2 , Nicholas 1 ), b. Groton, Mass., June 16, 1701 ; m. March 20, 1723, Abigail Lee, dau. of Samuel and Mary Lee of Killingly. She was b. 1703 or 4, and d. Oct. 18, 1782, in her 79th year; he d. June 21, 1785. He removed with his parents to Killingly, where he remained during the remainder of his life. In the Register of Deeds he is called a mason. Sept. 23, 1742, he bought of his father 113 acres of land in K. for ,£100; on July 4, 1759, he bought two tracts of land of Thomas Sumner for £155.* He was a man of means and prosperous. Children, b. Killingly :

  • i. Samuel, b. Feb. 24, 1724.
  • ii. Martha, b. Oct. 14, 1725 ; m. Elisha Hopkins. He d. Nov. 18, 1798; she d. in Providence, Sept., 1815. He served in the Revolutionary army, first as private, later as Captain and Adjutant ; was taken prisoner at Long Island, Aug., 1776; exchanged and served to end of war.
  • iii. Mercy, b. Aug. 23, 1729. 74.
  • iv. Isaiah, b. April 22, 1732.
  • v. Jeremiah, bapt. Woodstock, May 18, 1735. No further record,
  • vi. Sarah, b. July 4, 1737 ; m. July 13, 1758, Josiah Chaffee of Woodstock, Conn,
  • vii. Rhoda, b. May 5, 1739 ; m. Aug. 5, 1759, James Chaffee of Woodstock.

NICHOLAS CADY (1627–1712) was born in Bury Saint Marys, Suffolk, England. He arrived in Massachusetts with his parents when he was about 2-3 years old. In 1650 he married Judith Knapp in Watertown, Mass. He appears on the Watertown census in 1653. Judith died in 1668 in Groton, Middlesex, Mass. He remarried to Patience Redland in 1685. Joseph died on the 14th of May, 1712, in Groton, New London, Connecticut.
