Mercury Newspaper LARGE -On June 24, at his late residence, Queen-street, Sandy Bay, Stephen Large, aged 72 years.
Stephen Large, son of Edmund Large and Elizabeth Unknown, was born on 28 Nov 1819 in Batheaston, Somerset, England, died on 24 Jun 1891 in Sandy Bay, Hobart at age 71, and was buried in 1891 in Queenborough Cemetery, Sandy Bay, Hobart.
General Notes: Stephen, Charlotte and children Emma, Ann and Mary arrived as assisted migrants on the 'Sir George Seymour'. They arrived at Point Henry, Geelong on the 14th day of May 1849 after leaving Plymouth on the 9th January 1849, a 126 day voyage. Stephen is listed as an agricultural labourer, age 29, possessed of a bible, from Somerset, Wesleyan and could read and write. Charlotte, housekeeper, aged 32, could read and write. Emma, daughter, age 8, read and write a little, Ann, daughter, age 6, read only, Mary, daughter, age 2, neither read nor write. Their destination was listed as 'the depot', where they arrived on May 23 and left on June 2 after spending 10 days there. They were going to his brother in Hobart Town, VDL, by private arrangement. They sailed on the 'Joseph Cripps' which departed Geelong on 4 June 1849, arriving in Hobart on 14 June with '6 members of the Large family on board' as cabin passengers. It must have been quite a trip to have taken 10 days to cross Bass Strait. The Larges are listed as Large, Snr, Large, Jnr, wife & 3 children. Not sure who the Large Jnr is, unless it was a son born on the way out (although this is not shown in the shipping records). However, daughter Charlotte was born on 9 September, so wife Charlotte was actually 6 months pregnant on arrival. Stephen then convinced his two brothers, Henry and Thomas, to emigrate. We have copies of two letters he sent to them, and a copy of the diary kept by his sister-in-law Elizabeth, wife of Henry, on their voyage out. In the Directory of Tasmania 1867-8, Stephen is listed as living in Sandy Bay Rd, as is his brother Henry. His other brother, Thomas is listed as living in Russell Crescent. The Tasmanian Post Office Directory of 1892-3 lists Mr Steven Large as living in Queen St East, Sandy Bay. At his death, his occupation was given as gentleman. He died of old age and heart disease. He left an estate worth £911 to his wife, and on her death, to be divided among his living children, Emma, Mary, Charlotte, Elizabeth and grandson, George Norris Dove (son of Ann).
The death notice reads: Large - On June 24 at his late residence Queen-street, Sandy Bay, Stephen Large, aged 72 years. funeral FRIDAY AFTERNOON 3 o'clock, when friends are respectfully invited to attend. (The Mercury, 25.6.1891)
