From William G. Cutler's History of the State of Kansas, published in 1883 by A. T. Andreas, Chicago, IL.
STEVEN A. ROGERS, farmer, P. O. Cawker City, was born June 15, 1847, in Lamoille County, Vt. In 1852, his parents moved to Iowa, and in 1859, went to Illinois, where he lived, farming, until 1870, when he came to Mitchell County, Kan., where he is today on a fine farm of 640 acres, 400 acres under cultivation, with good buildings and well stocked. This year raised 120 acres of corn, averaging forty bushels to the acre. Was married to Miss Lydia McCune. They have five children - Edward, Joseph, Flora, Ralph and Charlie.
More details:
1. Stephen went slowly from Illinois to Kansas, stopping in Montgomery County, Iowa to do farm laboring with his father (per 1870 census). Two brothers were in neighboring Adams County.
2. The 1884 plat book has Stephen owning a farm of 320 acres, shaped in a way that suggests he sold off another 320 acres (one parcel of 160 and two of 80 acres) in the past. The 320 acres was one of the largest farms in Cawker Township.
