The Find A Grave memorial creator confirmed his parental linkage for Stephen Herrick Root with Phebe (Hale) Root was an assumption. With Phebe and Stephen's stones positioned as they are within the McKune Cemetery located at Oakland Township, Susquehanna County, PA, his conclusion is justifiable.
Stephen and Phebe's stones are within the same burial plot and below is how their headstones read starting with the main road proceeding towards the Susquehanna River, or North to South ....
- Isaac and Elizabeth Hale stones on Lot #1
- Stephen & Phebe - Lot #2
- No stones - Lot #3
- Alvin "Infant Smith" - Lot #4.
With both stones, the style and carver's penmanship are similar. Both stones were completely hand-hewn and made before the unveiling of steam powered tools.
The text lengthiness inscribed on both stones does intimate a relationship to each other.
All this said and done, there's no documented "proof" that Phebe is the mother of Stephen Herrick, however it does appear to be a factual assumption.
