Thayer, Stephen Cook Stephen Cook Thayer, age 74, died on July 14, 2013, peacefully with family by his side at home in Dallas, TX. He was predeceased by son Peter M. Thayer, brother Francis W. Thayer, parents Stephen C. Thayer and Anne Thayer Mallon, and stepfather H. Neil Mallon. He is survived by his wife Jane of 26 years and his son Stephen C. Thayer III. He is also survived by a sister and numerous nieces and nephews. Steve Thayer was born on June, 13, 1939, in Cleveland, Ohio, and attended Kent School, Kent, CT, Class of '57 and Williams College, Williamstown, MA, Class of '61. Steve was an excellent athlete, playing tennis and squash for Williams, and was invited to play at Wimbledon. After landing his dream job in New York City, Uncle Sam intruded on his idyll, and to avoid being drafted, he applied and was accepted to Navy OCS. From there he went to Naval Justice School and Anti-Submarine Warfare School. A year after that he was on a destroyer in the Far East. Besides his ship duties, Steve's commanding officer requested that Steve join his public relations efforts and play tennis at every port. Post Navy, Steve moved to Dallas and graduated from SMU Law School. Following successive jobs as a trust officer and an investment manager, his next thirty years were spent in the enviable position as Director of the International Department of a regional investment bank in Dallas. Steve posited that if you must work, why not do it in places like London, Edinburgh, Paris, Zurich, Geneva, and Hong Kong? Upon retirement, he turned his efforts toward securities arbitration work, a six year term on the Dallas County Arbitration Review Board, wine collecting, attempting to become a single digit golf handicapper at Brook Hollow Golf Club, and traveling the great American West. Steve was a loyal, active member of the Chevaliers du Tastevin and Commanderie de Bordeaux. Steve loved games, especially backgammon and bridge. He helped start the renowned backgammon club The Lone Star Chouette. Steve was passionate about education and his alma maters Kent School and Williams College. He dearly loved his family and friends. Steve embraced life. Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, July 24th, 2013, 4PM, Saint Michael and All Angels Church, 8011 Douglas Ave, Dallas, TX 75225. The family requests that in lieu of flowers any memorial be donated to the World Affairs Council of Dallas/Fort Worth in honor of its founder H. Neil Mallon.
