Son of Jacob Troyer and Maria Wenger (later wife of John Bare), husband of Caroline Berkey, whom he married on December 18, 1840 in Holmes, Ohio, and father of Emanuel, Silas, William, Franklin, Amelia, and Louisa Troyer.

Husband of Susannah Heni, whom he married on January 4, 1861, and father of Cynthia, George Douglas, Marietta (married Schmidt), Elmer, Allen, Hiram, Luella, and Albert Troyer.

In 1880, Stephen Troyer, aged 64, was living in Sugar Creek, Tuscawaras, Ohio, with his wife, Susan Troyer, aged 44, and children, George Troyer, aged 17, Marietta Troyer, aged 15, Elmer Troyer, aged 13, Allen Troyer, aged 11, Hiram Troyer, aged 9, and Albert Troyer, aged 10 months. Stephen was shown to be a farmer.
