About Stephen Thomas Williams
An email from another Decendent, Wanda Tarwater, says that Stephen's wife was named Lucy/or Linny, a Cherokee Indian. According to her, Stephen Thomas Williams, along with two brothers, Samuel, and Green Williams, came to America as missionaries to the Indians in 1790 with the movement of the Methodist Church. The 3 brothers left their father, Geoffrey Williams, in Wales and went to London, England where the Church of England commissioned Stephen to be a missionary to the Cherokee Indians by the Wesley brothers. He was a missionary to the Cherokee in South Carolina and eventually married the Chief's daughter. Stephen went to Alabama; Green went to Tennessee, and Samuel went to Arkansas, after a stop in Tennessee. I am trying to confirm all this.
From coorespondance with Ralph Palmer. Decendent of Stephen Thomas Williams, Jr.
Stephen married an Indian girl and settleld on a creek about 3 miles NE of where the town of Hamilton, Alabama, now stands. He also says that there is speculation that Stephen, and his Indian wife are buried in an Indian burial ground in Crittendon Co., Arkansas. I am sceptical about this.
In Itawamba Co., Miss. in Tremont, there is a grave at the Tilden Cem., of a Steven Williams born. July 4, 1775 died, May 14, 1857. Don't know for sure who this is.
Notes for LUCY: From Wanda Tarwater's email; Lucy, or Linny, was a Cherokee Indian, who may have been the daughter of a Chief in South Carolina.
