About LCpl. Stewart Alexander Aitken

Military Medal (MM) - London Gazette, 11 October 1916, p9839:Having located his citation its fitting that his courage be remembered. His citation reads as follow and is taken from the original Army Form W3121. "Distinguished brave and valuable service as a stretcher bearer on Gallipoli for six months. During August fighting worked devotedly and unceasingly in removing wounded under fire."

Son of James A. and Ellen S. Aitken, of Waikaka Valley, Southland, New Zealand. Also served at Gallipoli. Before the war Stewart had met Una Hamel, of Dunedin, and they had fallen in love. We don't think they were engaged, but she had been to the farm and met the family. Una was devastated when he was killed. Later she married a widower and had 3 children, but to the end of her life she remembered Stewart, her first love. Source: Sue via Cenotaph.
