About Stillman Foote Westbrook

After attending Williams College for two years, in 1911 he went to Hartford as a partner in the Guernsey-Westbrook Lumber Company. He served in the U.S. Army on the Mexican border in 1916 as Second Lieutenant. During World War I, he served in France in the 101st Machine Gun Battalion and the 104th Infantry, reaching the rank of Major. He combined many of his wartime letters with some narrative in a book entitled, "Those Eighteen Months."

Joining the Aetna Life Insurance Company in 1926, he was elected a vice president in 1928. That role put him in charge of all construction of the Home Office building begun in 1929. During this time he managed the company's Farm Mortgage Department and became widely recognized as an authority on the subject. He was an active leader in Hartford civic affairs, including the Community Chest and service as Chairman of the Hartford Housing Authority in 1939 and 1940, and Chairman of the National United Way. The Hartford public housing project, Westbrook Village, carries his name.

His adult friends knew him by the name "Tim."

The Westbrooks lived at 1054 Asylum Avenue, Hartford, in the home built by William Lyman Collins, her maternal grandfather. The house was on "the block," a city block that contained the homes of many of the children and grandchildren of William L. Collins, including most of the children of Samuel G. Dunham. Nearly the whole block was sold to the National Fire Insurance Company in 1939 for its home office. The property now is occupied by an extension of the St. Francis Hospital. After the family sold the property, they lived at 100 Scarborough Street, Hartford. They were members of the Asylum Hill Congregational Church.
