About Stuart James Redpath
We think: SJ trained at Guys hospital in London. He set up practice as a pharmacist in Johannesburg at age 20, but moved to Bloemfontein soon after.. In 1899 the Boer war broke out. SJ served on the British side with the Royal Natal Carbineers. He was in the siege of Ladysmith and wrote an extensive diary (my sister has this I believe). He received a Distinguished Conduct Medal for rescuing wounded men under fire at Broken Hill (aka Caesars Hill). The war ended in 1902. SJ returned to Bloemfontein and He and Alice got married. She was of German heritage, her family had fought with the Boers. Bad feeling lead to the couple emigrating to Canada. Then in WW1 SJ joined up with the Royal Canadian mounted rifles, Soon after the war ended in 1918, they returned to South Africa to find many friends and family had died in the 1919 influenza epidemic.
