About Sura Blumberg

GEDCOM Note

The marriage record gives her age as 18, whereas according to her birth record she was born on 24 Mar 1876, which would make her 20. Since they were married in Berlin, Paul looked up “tracingthepast” for me to see if they were still in Berlin at the time of the census in May 1939. There is no record for Mordka, but there is a record for a Sara Popower, nee Blikaberg, dob 24 April 1874 in Warsaw. Sara Popower nee Blikaberg 24.04.1874 Warszawa (Warschau) Christburger Str. 41 Aufg. 1 Prenzlauer Berg Berlin Sura’s dob is 24 Mar 1876 rather than 1874, and she was born in Warsaw, so this has a good chance of being her. There are no records for Mordke. He may have died, or emigrated.

6Feb2018 My heritage found a record of Sura's temporary entry into Brazil (Rio) 22 Aug 1945, so she survived. She is listed as a widow. There's a photo of her. From My Heritage also came the information that she had a son, Meier Martin Popower, born 3 October 1897. Interestingly, no father is listed. The original certificate says he was given the name Israel by the Nazis in February 1939. This was revoked 15 January 1953, but this may have been automatic and may not indicate he survived. On the other hand, he is not registered in Tracing the Past in 1939, nor is he listed on Yad Vashem as either a survivor or a victim, so he may have left Germany by the time of the census.

So I did some more digging and discovered a Mauricio Popower travelling between Sao Paulo and Los Angeles in 1960 and 1961, which looked promising. In the 1960 record, his birth is given as 21 May 1900, in Berlin. In 1961, the date is 2 May 1900, also in Berlin, and the addresses in both Brazil and Los Angeles are the same, so this is clearly the same person. A little further digging revealed a Moritz Popower (recorded as Popower in Ancestry, but as Popomer on his immigration record). This shows his original entry into Brazil on 6 March 1939, parents Max Popower and Sara Blumberg, with birth on 2 May 1900, in Berlin.

There is also an Abraham Popower, born 26 Feb 1897, who could possibly be her son. Abraham Popower 26.02.1897Warszawa (Warschau) Elsässer Str. 76 Mitte Berlin The name Abraham is significant, because her grandfather, Bina’s father, was named Abraham. Note, however, that Sura and Mordka were married on 30 Oct 1896 in Berlin, and this Abraham was born 26 Feb 1897 in Warsaw, so if this is Sura’s son, she must have been heavily pregnant at the time of her marriage, and she would have had to have gone back to Warsaw to have the baby.

Yad Vashem has 3 records for an Abraham Popower, born in 1897. The first is clearly not Sura’s son. It reads: Abraham Popower was born in Warszawa, Poland in 1897 to Joel and Gittla. He was a self employed and married to Erna nee Scheller. Prior to WWII he lived in Berlin, Germany. Abraham was murdered in the Shoah. This information is based on a Page of Testimony (displayed here) submitted by his daughter, Vera Kobrin Popower. Examination of the testimony gives his birth date as 26 Feb 1897, which matches the Abraham Popower in the 1939 Berlin census.

The second is probably another record for the Abraham Popower above. Abraham Popower was born in Warszawa, Poland in 1897. Prior to WWII he lived in Berlin, Germany. During the war he was in Bergen Belsen, Germany. Abraham was murdered in the Shoah. This information is based on a List of murdered Jews from Germany found in Hall of Names - Memorial Research Endeavors.

The third is clearly a different person from the first two, and could still be a candidate for Sura’s son, especially as it does not give an exact date of birth in 1897. Abraham Popower was born in Warszawa, Poland in 1897. During the war he was in France. Deported with Transport 27, Train 901-22 from Drancy,Camp,France to Auschwitz Birkenau,Extermination Camp,Poland on 02/09/1942. Abraham was murdered in the Shoah. This information is based on a List of deportation from France found in Le Memorial de la deportation des juifs de france, Beate et Serge Klarsfeld, Paris 1978.
