About Surgeon Rufus Abram Nott, CSA

In 1843, Rufus and his wife, Sally Whittaker, left South Carolina with their goods and chattels and stopped for a while on the White river in Arkansas, where he bought a plantation. While they were in Arkansas, their daughter, Amelia (called Minna), was born. In the latter part of 1844, the family then moved to Desoto Parish, Louisiana, near the village of Kingston. In this parish were located a number of South Carolina families, some of whom were related to them. Among those who were related to them were the Marshall's, Meanse's, Rochelle' s, Taylor's and Witherspoon's.

He was a Division Surgeon in the Confederate Army in charge of hospitals in Vicksburg and down through Mississippi in the Civil War. During the time that Union General Bank's army of Yankees was making its raid in Louisiana, Rufus brought his wife and their daughters, Minna and Sophia, to Independence, Texas and located them there. During the last years of the war, Minna and Sophia went to school to old Baylor College in Independence. It was there that Minna met and married W. A. Williamson in 1866.

He and his wife must have moved back to his plantation in Desoto Parish after the war as Minna gave birth to her first child, Rufus Nott Williamson, there in 1867. In 1868, he moved to St. Mary's, Texas along with W.A. and his family. In 1870, along with W.A. and his family, he moved to Rockport, Texas and opened a drug store. He lived there until 1883 or 1884 at which time, he moved to Goliad. He lived there until he died.
