About Susan Washington Avery

Susan Morrison Avery lived somewhat in the shadow of her family. She was the first wife of Alphonso Calhoun Avery. Two of their five children bore the names of their parents.

Her husband was an attorney and a major in the 6th North Carolina Regiment, Confederate States Army. Her brothers and brothers-in-law were also involved in the CSA.

It is generally known, however, that the women left behind maintained hearth and home, as was the case in most wars. Susan Avery was no exception.
