Additional Biographical Information:

Susan Alwin Bristow was born in Louis Trichardt on October 10, 1952, the eldest daughter of John and Patricia Bristow. She was tragically and senselessly killed last Sunday evening at her home on the mountain. Susan grew up between the Bristow family home "Ridgeways" on the Witvlag road, her beloved Sentinel ranch on the Limpopo river and her mother’s home in Pretoria. She started school at Soutpansberg Primary and completed her education at St Andrews, Johannesburg. She later studied Fine Arts at Michaelus in Cape Town. Susan went on to be a highly original and eccentric artist with a distinctive style that reflected her love of nature and wildlife. Susan moved back to the Soutspanberg in 1993 and began building her extraordinary house on her mountain property. Her house, which is a mosaic of hand-picked stones, stained-glass windows and spectacular views, was her pride and joy and she laboured endlessly to develop and maintain it. We will remember her in her garden with her broad-brimmed straw hat, surrounded by her much-loved menagerie of goats, dogs, cats and poultry. Despite numerous attacks, endless struggles and the remoteness of her property, Susan steadfastly refused to be frightened from the home she had created for herself in the mountains. Her dear friend, Helene Jaume, described her as "the bravest person I know." Susan was the eldest of eight Bristow children and she leaves behind her siblings Gavin, Digby, Colin, Jane, Doric, Tuffin and Tegan, and her nephews and nieces Kim, Ash, Alistair, Adam, Emily, Tarquin, Casper-John, Aidan, Owen, and Isabel. The family would like to thank the Plaaswag and all Susan’s friends for all the support they gave Susan over the years, with special thanks to the Jaume family.
