About Susan Buhler Taber

Susan Buhler Taber 1947 ~ 2010 Susan Buhler Taber, age 62, of Newark, DE, died on Wednesday, January 20, 2010, at her home. Susan was born May 5, 1947 in Salt Lake City, Utah, the oldest of the eight children of Robert Earl Buhler and Phyllis Liddle. A Presidential Scholar out of South High School, she graduated with Honors in English and Great Distinction from Stanford University, and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. She went on to earn an M.A. in education, also from Stanford. Later, she earned a Ph.D. from the University of Delaware in curriculum development, focusing on how children learn proportional reasoning.

Most recently, Susan served on the faculty of Rowan University, preparing elementary school teachers to teach mathematics. She was Chair of the Department of Elementary Education, and represented her department in the Faculty Senate for several years.

A faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and a scholar of the Gospel, Susan served in many teaching and administrative positions. She wrote Mormon Lives: A Year in the Elkton Ward. Susan's daughter Abigail was diagnosed with leukemia in 1983, when she was two and a half, and died when she was five, in 1986. The intense care that she gave Abby was an important chapter in Susan's life.

Susan is survived by her husband of 40 years, Douglass F. Taber, their other five children, John (Alisa) of Elsmere, Delaware, Alan (Jessica) of Cinnaminson, New Jersey, Emma (Richard Winkel) of Beaverton, Oregon, Christina (A. Manahi Taber-Kewene) of Manhattan, and Robert (Sarah) of Gainesville, Florida, and 12 grandchildren. She is also survived by her siblings, Linda Sillitoe of Ogden, Utah, Douglas W. Buhler of Taylorsville, Utah, David L. Buhler of Salt Lake City, Kathryn Ballard of West Valley City, Janean Justham of Salt Lake City, Stephen J. Buhler of West Valley City, and Annette Andrus of Rosemond, CA, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family thanks the personnel of the Helen Graham Cancer Center and of Compassionate Care Hospice for their loving support through Susan's illness. There will be a visitation at 10 a.m. on Sat., Feb. 6th, at the Liberty Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 445 East Harvard Ave., Salt Lake City, followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be sent to the Perpetual Education Fund of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, in care of the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 W. Park Place, Newark, DE 19711.
