Susan Ann Duval, the fifth daughter of Maj. Claiborne (1760-1824) and Elizabeth Pope DuVal (1760-1815), was born August 16, 1802, in Logan County, KY. She married in 1833, Methodist minister Rev. Hardy Murfree Cryer (1792-1846), son of James (-1816) and Mary Cotton Cryer of Sumner County, TN. They resided in Sumner County where he was engaged in the breeding of thoroughbred horses. He advised President Jackson in the development of his stable. He was a great nephew of Lt. Col. Hardy Murfree (1752-1809) who served in the Revolution and in whose honor Murfreesboro, TN, is named. Three children were Martha Duval (1836-1917); Elizabeth Claiborne (1838-1906); and Mary Catherine "Kate" Cryer (1839-1918) who lived in Nashville and married in 1872, William B. Dunn. Others were William Howard Douglas (1834); 1Lt. Edward Fountain Reed (1837-62) who served in the 2nd Tenn. Infantry Regiment (CSA) and died in the Civil War at Shiloh, TN; Mary Cage (1839-); Henry Bascome (d. inf.); and John L. F. Cage Cryer.
Martha "Mattie" Duval Cryer (1836-1917) lived at Castalian Springs, TN. She married in 1856, William Rufus Anglea (1833-1904), son of James (c1800-) and Susanna Briley Anglea, of Trousdale County, TN. Their eight children were Gwinetta DuVal (1857-77)(dsp); Hardy Cryer (1861-1907); Katherine Edward Reed (1863-1938); Mary Brown (1865-1954) who married in 1899, Andrew Jackson Glenn (1874-1939); James Simpson (1867-1956); William Swaney (1869-1945) who married Daisy Hardy (1894-1970); John Malone (1873-1936) who was mayor of Edmond, OK and Alfa W. Anglea (1880-1928).
Elizabeth Claiborne Cryer (1838-1906) married in 1856, 2Lt Daniel Johnson Anthony (1838-1909) who served in the 17th/30th Tenn. Infantry Regiment CSA, in the Civil War. They lived in Terrell, TX. Ten children were Joseph Boyers (1857-1943); Evalina Graham (1859-93); David Daniel E. (1863-1924) who served in the Spanish-America War; Frank C. (1865-1930); Daisy "Lizzie" (1868-1971); Jane Ferris (1870-1956); Graham D. (1872-1939); Mary "Mae" E. (1876-1970) who married Franklin Clarke Burr (1873-1959) and lived in Tyler, TX.; Maud (1879-81) and Zula Susan Anthony (1882-1929).
Susan Ann DuVal died October 1, 1845/6. Her husband, Rev. Hardy M. Cryer, died February 7, 1846. They reportedly were buried in the Cryer Family Cemetery, Sumner County, TN.
