About Susan Shields
When Susan married James Shields on 24th September 1913 at St Alphonsus Chapel, Glasgow, she lived in London Street Glasgow (possibly number 143 as that was the family address). James Shields lived in 119 Saltmarket Glasgow at the time of their marriage. They were both 25 years old. Their witnesses to their wedding were Patrick Campbell (no relation) and Norah Kelly. Susan was a Stationery Warehousewoman and James was a Motor Mechanic, as written on their marriage certificate. Susan worked in a Christmas card factory. She would attach the red ribbons down the side of the cards. As a child Susan took Rheumatic Fever, which at the time could be a killer. It is thought this gave her a weakness to her heart.
Susan’s parents were married in St Alphonsus Chapel, Glasgow, as did Susan and her sisters, Bridget and Mary.
Catherine junior, John junior and their half brother Thomas, went to America around 1907 & 1920’s, it is thought none of them ever married.
Susan married on 24th September 1913, this would her sister Bridget (Nellie’s) 5th wedding anniversary.
Bridget (Nellie) married on 24th September 1908.
Susan and Mary married in the same year. Mary’s wedding was on the 26th March 1913.
The First World War was 1914 - 1918, was this a reason to be married before the war, or was it coincidence?
