About Susan Priscilla Whitaker

She was born in 1790 according to the 1850 census, but 1780 according to the 1860 census. 1790 is the more likely. She married John Whitaker in North Carolina. Some descendants give the the time of their marriage as about 1807. She died between 1860-70, or about 1865.

A family legend handed down about her for a half-century after her death was recorded in the 1920s by Ida May Whitaker. Ida Whitaker wrote that Susan was the second wife of Old John Whitaker but some said she was the third. The legend was that Susan was a young girl, playing a game of gazing in the well and wishing to see her future. The other girls all saw boys they knew and liked but Susan was dismayed to see a very old man with a huge brood of children around him. She did not know him at that time, but when the widower "moved into the county," she recognized him as her destiny and resigned to marry him and rear his motherless children. They married in N.C. about 1807 and moved to Overton Co., Tennessee before moving to Mulberry, Lincoln Co., TN. for two years near relatives, finally settling in Madison County on the farm still owned by descendants today. The first log house built on the farm circa 1820 is still standing. Susan Graham Whitaker died between 1860-70 and was buried in the family cemetery.

Several DAR members descended from Susan G. Whitaker list her name as Susan Gresham rather than Graham, but Ida Whitaker's original account records her maiden name Graham.

1840 Federal census, Marshall County, AL.: Susan Whitaker, with 3 sons, next to Nathan Whitaker, near William Whitaker, Christianna Whitaker, James Wright, Stapler, Craig, Morrow, Winkles families. This was near the Madison County line. 1850 Federal census: Madison County with son Simon. Age 60, born N.C. 1850 Alabama State Census: Madison County, household of Simon Whitaker shows one male 21-45, one male under 21 and two while females "over 21." Total 4. 1860 Federal census: Madison County with son Simon. Age 80, born S.C. (sic?) 1866 Alabama State Census: Not shown. 1870 census: Not listed. Simon Whitaker listed in Marshall County. The Keel-Whitaker Family by P.B. Keel, H.G. Whitaker, et al., states that her youngest son Simon Whitaker lived with her all his life and inherited her property.
