Daughter of Daniel Howell and Elizabeth Yerkes, wife of the late paper manufacturer, George Elkins (1786-1849), of Master & 12th Street. Susanna was born in Moreland Township, which was then a part of Montgomery County. She and her husband resided in Philadelphia. Together they had seven children:

i) Louisa Ann Elkins, b. September 21, 1814, d. April 25, 1897, m. Henry Baker Newlin ii) Mary Hise Elkins, b. May 24, 1816, m. William Read iii) Sarah Ann Elkins, b. July 6, 1819, d. Aug. 25, 1821 iv) Elizabeth Elkins, b. June 16, 1823, d. March 14, 1909, m. George Thomas Peters v) Matilda Beaver Elkins, b. April 15, 1825, d. June 27, 1908, m. John T. Schell vi) George Washington Elkins, b. March 15, 1828, d. July 7, 1905 in Pittsburgh, PA vii) William Lukens Elkins, b. May 2, 1832, d. November 7, 1903, m. Mary Louise Broomall

Originally interred at Odd Fellows Cemetery, established March 24, 1849 at 23rd and Diamond Streets in Philadelphia. In 1951, the cemetery was acquired by the City of Philadelphia in order to build the Raymond Rosen Housing Development.
