Joseph Cobb was born in Amsterdam in 1588 to Richard Cobb of Aberdeen, Scotland and Sybil Sheets of Holland. Joseph immigrated to Elizabeth City County, Virginia in 1613, and married Elizabeth Flinton in 1623. They settled in Isle of Wight Co., where he died after 1653/54.

There is something written about Sybil Sheets in this book; but page 341 is missing from the parts for reading shown in Google Books. Lewises, Meriwethers and Their Kin Genealogical Publishing Com, 1938 - Reference - 652 pages

Note: By 1650, there were two Cobb families firmly established in Virginia, within just a few miles of each other...the families of Ambrose Cobbs in what is now York County, and that of Joseph Cobb in Isle of Wight County. DNA analysis of descendants of both men has now clearly established these two families were UNRELATED. While there is no written documents connecting Joseph Cobb to any other children other than those mentioned by name in his will, including Nicholas Cobb, in his book “Nicholas Cobb Descendants, Neighbors and Relatives, 1613 – 1983,” Joe H. Cobb states, “Of all the conjectures alluded to in this chapter the most plausible one is that which connects Nicholas Cobb to Joseph Cobb, the immigrant. The verdict is that Nicholas Cobb was one of ‘ye said childen that are left.’”

In Joseph Foster's Alumni Oxonienses, 1500-1714 there are twenty Cobb, Cobbs, Cobbe, Cobbes Alumni. But the only Richard Cobb of the right date would appear to be: Cobbe, Richard, scholar Corpus Christi, 1572 BA: 1575 MA: fellow 1579; BD 1587; licensed to preach 1597; died 1597

By the turn of the 17th century the name Cobb was found throughout the British Isles as noted by the numerous coats of arms earned by Cobbs in the service of the Crown: 8 England. Southhampton county, crest—out of a ducal coronet, a pelican's head vulning

 itself.

Norfolk county, crest—a swan's head with fish in beak. Oxon, York. Norfolk counties, crest—an elephant. Kent and Romney counties, crest—out of a ducal coronet a demi-leopard rampart, charges—three cocks. Scotland. Angus county, crest -a swan rising from a coronet. Clan—Lindsay Ireland. Crest—a dexter hand brandishing a scimitar.

Cobbs are from a race whose Celtic blood was intermingled with that of the Romans, Vikings and Normans over a period of a thousand years. They were English.

The name recorded for the early Virginia immigrants was "Cobbs." As their descendants moved south and westward from Virginia, more often than not, they dropped the "s" from the name.

Children of Sybil Sheetz and Richard Cobb are:

1. +Joseph Cobb, b. 1588, Amsterdam, The Netherlands519, d. March 01, 1652/53, Isle of Wight, Virginia519

Richard Cobb was born in Aberdeen, Scotland. Richard was educated at Oxford University and is thought to have been part of a military expedition to the Netherlands on behalf of England and Queen Elizabeth I. In 1576 he married Sybil Sheets and settled there in Holland. Sybil died in 1588 while Richard died nine years later in 1597. Sybil could possibly have died from childbirth complications as her death occurred in the same year their son was born.

Their son, Joseph Cobb was born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, in 1588. He married Elizabeth Flinton in 1609. In 1613 he arrived in the Jamestown settlement in Virginia on the London Company ship, Treasurer.

Notes

Note: He was educated at Oxford University.Richard served Queen Elizabeth as a member of Henry Champions troop. In1576 he married Sybil Sheetz and settle d in Holland.

Similar verbiage from different source, with last name as "Cobbs" instead of "Cobb": "Following education at Oxford University, Richard Cobbs, "the Galliant Scot," served Queen Elizabeth I as a member of Henry Champion's troop of 110 gentlemen in the fight for the Protestant cause in France and Holland. With the religious wars terminated by the pacification of Ghent, he married Sybil Sheetz in 1576, and settled in Holland. "[1]

Richard Cobb and Sybil Sheets: Marriage: 08 Nov 1576, Holland

"Richard Cobb, of Oxford and Aberdeen, student of Christ Church, fought against the Spaniards in the Low Countries, married Sybil Sheets, in Holland, November 8, 1576.She bore him sixteen children, one named Joseph, born in Amsterdam in 1588"[2]

Discounting that he is the father of Joseph Cobb:

"In addition to the United Kingdom and the United States, I have found records in the Netherlands (and at Austin Friars Dutch Church in London), and indeed, family lore has it that Joseph Cobb was actually the son of Richard Cobb, a Scottish soldier serving in the Low Countries during the Eighty Years' War.

I personally do not hold with that theory, however, as the name Richard never re-appeared in our line. "[Rachel Ray] [3] Census
