Sylvanus Baldwin, son of Barnabas Baldwin and Mary Botsford, was born Sept. 17, 1706 in that part of Milford, now Woodbridge, in the Hogg meadow tract; and the large, old-fashioned, two-story, square house built by him is still standing. and until recently occupied by his descendants. It is now vacant.

He married on Apr. 18, 1734, with MARY FRENCH, dau. of Francis French, of Derby, Conn. She was born Feb. 6, 1710 and died 1802. Her father was born Nov. 11, 1677 (son of Francis French, one of the first settlers of Derby, who emigrated at the age of ten in ship "Defence," to Boston, in 1635, with others of the name. Francis Sr. died Feb. 14, 1696. His wife, Lydia Bunnill, survived, and died Apr. 7, 1708. She was the daughter of William Bunnill of New Haven vy Anna, dau. Benjamin Wilmot. Francis Jr, married Sept. 1703, Ann Bower, dau. Rev. John Bower of Derby, by Bridget, his w., dau. Anthony Thompson of New Haven. Rev. John Bower was son of George and Barbara, of Plymouth colony. Francis French Jr., d. Sept. 11, 1751; his wife Jan 11, 1744. He is called, in Milford Record in 1739, "Serg't."

Sylvanus Baldwin of Milford was a "Messenger" when Daniel Boardman was ordained as pastor of ye Church of Christ in New Milford on Nov. 21, 1716.

Sylvanus died Jan. 2, 1785 and is buried in the cemetery in the southwest part of Woodbridge, and his epitaph reads:

'"In memory of Mr. Sylvanus Baldwin, who died Jan'y 2nd,1785, in the 79th year of his age. A kind husband, a tender parent. He had a great veneration for religion and morality." Next lies his wife: "In memory of Mary Baldwin, wife of Sylvanus Baldwin, who died Mar. 29th, 1802, aged 90."'

Children were: Mary (10/16/1735; is said to have m. Dr. David Beebe, of Trumbull; 1791, they are named as of Stratford, probably of the north part, now Trumbull, Ct), Dorcas (8/18/1738; m. Silas Alling), Elisha (3/24/1741), Sarah (3/16/1743; d. 1/23/1745), Hezikiah (bpt 2/14/1746; d. 3/2/1746), Sarah (2/1/1747; m. William Burrit), Charles (5/8/1751), and Hezikiah (8/24/1756).
