About TSgt. Roscoe Lee Drake

Roscoe Lee Drake, 86, of Gainesville, Florida, died at home surrounded by family on September 24, 2010. He was born in Ohoopee, Georgia on January 2, 1924 to Claude and Alice Drake. His early years were spent on the family farm and farming continued to be a lifelong interest. During WW II he was an engineer-gunner on the B-24 Liberator. He was a member of the 449th "Flying Horsemen", flying 51 consecutive missions, based out of Italy. After the war he returned to enter veterinary school at Auburn University. He later transferred to the University of Georgia and was in the first class to graduate from Georgia's veterinary college in 1950. He went on to practice in Georgia for approximately 12 years before moving to the Gainesville area. He retired after 30 years as the area veterinarian for the state of Florida where he aided in the eradication of brucellosis and tuberculosis. Roscoe was a member of North Pleasant Grove Baptist Church and served as a deacon. He had a wonderful sense of humor and loved sharing stories of his and his family's past, raising English bulldogs and being with his grandchildren. Roscoe is survived by his wife of 64 years, Betty Sikes Drake, four children, Melinda (Rocky) Chitty of Alachua, David (Sherry) Drake of Midway, GA, Elizabeth (John) Thomas of Alachua, and Roxanne (Reggie) Tumlin of Melrose. He also is survived by eight grandchildren, and eight great great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Nature Coast.
