Tabitha was born c. 1640 at Accomack Co, VA.3 As of before 12 July 1653,her married name was Smart.1,4 She married John Smart before 12 July 1653.1,4 She married Devereux Browne before 1660.1 Tabitha Browne was named as the relict of Mr. "Devoras" Browne by George Watson in will, written 4 Nov 1674. She was also named to be the executrix (Acc Co Wills, 1763-76(v), p. 242). Tabitha was named as an heir on 4 November 1674 at Accomack Co, VA. She was shown as Tabitha Browne, relict of Mr. Devoras Browne in the will of George Watson. She was given 300 acres on Long Love Branch and named Extr.5 As of after 1675,her married name was Custis.1 She married Gen. John Custis (II) (Built Arlington), son of Henry Custis and Joan Whittington (widow), after 1675.1 Tabitha was named in her husband's will on 18 March 1691 at Northampton Co, VA. She was shown as wife Tabitha Custis in the will of John Custis, Esq. It was noted that she had a sister Matilda and a daughter Tabitha Smart dec'd..6 Tabitha was named in her mother's will on 14 June 1691 at Accomack Co, VA. She was named as daughter Tabitha Custis in the will of Mary Scarburgh..2 As of September 1696,her married name was Hill.1 She married Col. Edward Hill in September 1696.1 Tabitha was living on 12 August 1700 at Accomack Co, VA. She was named as Madame Tabitha Hill, the great grandmother of Edmund Custis' children Thomas Custis and Tabitha Scarburgh Custis, and was to be their advisor during their minority..7 She made a will on 23 August 1717 at Accomack Co, VA. Tabitha Hill named only a great grandson Thomas Custis and his wife Ann. She left him 700 acres near the placed called White Marsh and to his wife Ann, my wearing stays embroidered with gold, my black suit and silk clothes and black stays set with bugles with one cloath of silver pettycoat. Great grandson Thomas Custis was the residual legatee of all her estate in Virginia, England or elsewhere. Thomas Custis was the executor. V. Tabitha, married four times, viz:

  • (1) Colonel Wm. Smart, who came to Northampton county from Lancaster county, Va., and had one child, Tabitha Scarburgh Smart, who married Richard Hill, of Accomac county;
  • (2) Devereux Browne, of Accomac, by whom she appears to have had no children;
  • (3) Major General John Custer, (his third wife), but she appears to have had no children by this marriage;
  • (4) in 1696 Colonel Edward Hill, of "Shirley," Charles City county, had no issue by this marriage.

Her daughter, Mrs. Tabitha Scarburgh (Smart) Hill, was the mother of Tabitha Scarburgh Hill, who married Edmund Custis, of "Deep Creek," Accomac county.
