Enlisted, June 27, 1916, in Machine Gun Troop, Squadron A Cavalry, New York City. He mustered in for Mexican border service with Machine Gun Troop, June 30, 1916. Squadron A Cavalry was assigned to Camp McAllen, Texas, with the 6th NY Division ( later 27th Division ). While at the border he was kicked by a horse and confined to quarters ( tent )September 16 - September 30, 1916. Squadron A Cavalry returned to New York, December 23, 1916, and mustered out of border service, December 28, 1916.
World War 1, attended OTC at Plattsburg Barracks, NY, and commissioned 2nd Lieutenant, Cavalry, August 15, 1917 and promoted 1st Lieutenant, Infantry in 1918. He was assigned to Company C, 306th Machine Gun Battalion, 77th Division. He saw heavy combat in France and was wounded in action, September 8, 1918 ( bullet left leg )near La Harazee, France. He returned to the States, early May 1919 an discharged May 12, 1919.
