About Tazewell Ward Hackworth

Taswell Ward Hackworth was enlisted as a Private in the 14th Virginia Infantry, Company B (Bedford Rifle Greys). He along with his two brothers, George Davis (My Great Great Grandfather) and Elijah would take part in the famous "Pickett's Charge" at Gettysburg. All 3 men were injured in the battle. George Davis was taken prisoner and taken to Fort Delaware where he died on May 21, 1864. Elijah was taken prisoner too, but was exchanged from DeCamp Hospital. Taswell would be transported to Richmond for medical care and would live to fight more battles.

He was present at Appomattox when Lee surrendered to Grant. Tazewell was first married to Mary Jane Nichols and they had 9 children. Mary Jane died when she was 55, after having been paralyzed for 5.5 years. Taswell later married Emma Plunkett Dowdy and they resided in Lynchburg, Virginia. On a personal note, I am so thankful for those in my family who served in the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Civil War, World War II, Vietnam, and Afghanistan. It is because of all those who served and who serve, that we have the freedom to be reading this post. Thank you! I would like to thank FindAGraver LJH for posting Taswell's military card and for the info on the Hackworth family from the book "Ethel: A Book of Faith and Courage" written by the late Cyril O. Burt.
