About Teitje (Tecia) Beukema
Tecia immigrated with her parents to the United States in 1881. She had partial paralysis because she was born with "a hip out of the socket." Before her marriage she worked in a button-factory at the skirts of Lamont. These buttons were made from mussel-shells, gathered by fishing in the river.
At age 18, Tecia married Cornelius Beukema. They lived in west Michigan initially and had several children there. In the early 1900's they moved to South Dakota, where they lived into the 1930's. As of the 1940 U.S. Census, they had retired in Spring Lake, Michigan. Tecia died at age 75.
As of the 1900 U.S. Census, Tecia had had 7 children, but one had died. As of 1910, per the U.S. Census, she had had 11 children, but only 8 were then living. She had two additional children by 1920, for a total of 13 children, 10 of whom reached adulthood.
