YOUNG MINER KILLED IN ACCIDENT AT FRANKLIN

VIBRATION OF ROPE ON ASCENDING SKIP IS THE CAUSE OF DEATH.

Willis Salo (Teofilus) Salo, aged about twenty years, a miner, met almost instant death this morning at the Franklin mine, when his head was crushed between the ascending skip and the plat at the thirty-first level. The accident occured in the No. 1 shaft at an early house and was attributed to the vibration of the rope.

As the skip reached the thirty-first level, the vibration caused it to rise and fall a distance of about one foot each way. Salo, who was riding at the top of the skip was thrown forward and his head was caught as above described causing almost instant death. Although the skip has a capacity for thirty-five men and was carrying only twenty-seven, it is claimed there were too many riding on the top part and only a few on the bottom part.

Coroner William Fisher of Calumet impaneled the following jury and held an inquest this morning: William F. Symons, John E. Kangas, the latter a cousin of the victim, William Jeffery, Arvid Sjolund, Matt Jacobson and Charles Warrila. The jury returned a verdict of accidental death in accordance with above.

The deceased is well known in Hancock and at the Boston and Albany location where he has been employed by the Franklin for about two years.
