About Terrence C Harris

Terrence C. ‘Salty’ Harris joined the “E” ‘Easy’ Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division after leaving the Navy because there wasn’t enough action so the reason for his nickname ‘Salty.’ Harris trained with Easy Company to parachute from C-47 transport aircraft over hostile territory.

During training, Harris moved up in the ranks from private to staff sergeant. However, prior to the landings at Normandy, Harris, along with another non-commissioned officer (NCO), started a mutiny against Easy Company’s commander Capt. Herbert Sobel. Known for his strict training practices, Sobel was disliked by many of his men, although later reports acknowledge that Sobel’s rigorous methods played a critical role in the company’s later successes. Harris and his fellow NCO threatened to resign their posts if Sobel was not removed. In response to their mutiny, Col. Robert Sink, 506 Parachute Infantry Regimental Commander, had them both arrested, demoted to privates, and Harris was transferred to ‘A’ Company of the 1st Battalion. He later volunteered to join the pathfinders of the 101st Airborne Division and fought in the Battle of Carentan, where he was killed by a sniper on June 18, 1944. Harris was awarded the Bronze Star.
