Charles La Rocque was a priest and third bishop of Saint-Hyacinthe. He was ordained in 1832 and ordained as bishop in 1866. Hwas parish priest for 22 years when, the second bishop of Saint-Hyacinthe, his cousin Joseph La Rocque resined and Charles agreed to succeed him. In addition to the $44,000. debt, Saint-Hyacinthe was probably , after Montreal, the town of Canada East where partisan struggles were most bitter. La Rocque instituted many plans to reduce the debt, including reducing his own expenses by departing from Saint-Hyacinthe and going to live in the parish of Beloeil. He was nicknamed "Handsome La Rocque". In addition to his handsome features he was known for his warmth and capacity for understanding.
