Lois Elgin Mize, age 83, passed away on Saturday, December 13, 2014, at the Hart Care Center in Hartwell, GA, surrounded by her loving family. Born on March 28, 1931, in Iva, SC, she was the daughter of the late William Fred Elgin and the late Gertrude King Elgin. She was a graduate of Anderson Girl’s High School, Class of 1949, where she played Varsity field hockey. She also played basketball for Appleton Mills, once scoring 29 points in a single game. For 25 years, Lois was employed as a teletype operator and proof reader at the Anderson Independent and Daily Mail. Lois was very competitive in all she did and strived to be the best. She loved to go ice skating with friends at Mirror Lake in North Carolina. She is remembered as a loving and caring person, especially for her mother and special needs son, Eric. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Anderson.

Survivors include her husband of approximately 64 years, Winfred H. Mize, Sr. of Anderson; 3 sons, Winfred H. Mize, Jr. of Starr, Johnny Lee Mize of Pendleton, and Mark Bradley Mize and his wife, Helen, of Martin, GA; 2 brothers, Leonard Elgin and Jared Elgin and wife, Hattie, both of Anderson; 2 grandchildren, Amanda and Andy; also surviving are several great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Mize was preceded in death by a son, Michael Eric Mize; 3 brothers, Albert, Roy, and Horace Elgin; and 4 sisters, Ruth Elgin, Janie Burton, Gladys Lollis Cox, and Sybil Poore.

A Graveside service will be held on Monday, December 15, 2014, at 3 p.m. at the Mausoleum Chapel at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The family will be at their respective homes and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Monday, December 15, 2014, from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m.

Contributions in memory of Lois Mize may be made to Gentiva Hospice, 855 Gaines School Road, Suite G, Athens, GA 30605. The family wishes to thank the special people of Hart Care Center who provided loving care for Mrs. Mize during her 10 years residence there.
