About Theophilus Monroe Neely

We can only speculate regarding the meaning of this unusual name for Thomas Carothers Neely and Mary A. (now thought to be Farris), or why they picked it for their ninth child, but here a few facts and possibilities:

  • It isn't a name previously seen among the Neelys, but it could have been a maternal family name; we know very little about Mary A.
  • It is a bilical name, variously translated and interpreted as: "Friend of God", "One who is loved by God", and "Lover of God." In the Bible, Theophilus is the person to whom the Apostle Luke addresses the books of Luke and Acts, which gives the Apostle's account of the facts of Jesus' life. It may have be a pseudonym used by Luke to protect the identy of a prominent person who supported Luke's work.
  • Biblical first names were popular in the ninetheenth century. The 1850 census shows at least 22 heads of households named Theophilus in Tennessee. In 1830 there were two heads of households with that first name in Maury County (where Thomas and Mary may have been married).
  • Thus, the possibilities range from maternal family name, through that of a friend, to something as simple as the local minister reading the scripture from Luke or Acts just before the birth, and the parents deciding they liked the name.
