About Thomas Adkins

A Patriot of the American Revolution for SOUTH CAROLINA (Soldier). DAR Ancestor # A003610

Parents: Benjamin Adkins (c. 1730 VA - ) and Eve Morris.

Thomas was born in the Ninety-Six District (which later became Laurens District), SC (per his application for a pension based on his service in the American Revolution, filed 10/21/1833).

For a more detailed picture of the military marker at his gravesite, go to the Media section. The cemetery was possibly also known as the Old Adkins Cemetery.

To read a transcription of the pension application of Thomas, and the application by his wife after his death, for a widow's pension, go to the Media/Documents section (Credit given there to the transcriber).

Thomas entered the Revolutionary War (S. C. Militia) at age 17, was captured and held prisoner by the British for six months before he could escape. An excerpt from his pension application: "State of Kentucky Whitley County - On the 21st day of October 1833 personally appeared before the Whitley County Court Thomas Adkins a resident of Whitley County Kentucky aged seventy-three years...That he entered the service of the United States in the year 1777 in Ninety Six (now Lawrence district [sic, Laurens district] South Carolina) under Captain John Templeton of the South Carolina Militia & Lieutenant Oglesby was marched to Cambridge under Colonel Lanoy [sic 1] thence to Augusta, Georgia thence to Brier Creek...had severe engagement with the enemy and was defeated; On the retreat several were drowned in crossing the Savannah River himself taken prisoner as he could not swim, he states that he was kept prisoners six months when he made his escape and joined his Army below Moncks Corner General Green [Nathanael Greene] and Sumpter [sic, Thomas Sumter] Commander under whom he served (some times in detached parties). 4th How were you called into service? Answer I was resentful of the treatment we then received from King George induced me to declare in favor of liberty and in a fit of excitement volunteered & joined Captain John Templeton's Company of militia which I never regretted."

Thomas & Ruthy (Linch/Lynch) Adkins were married January 1, 1782 in Ninety Six District (which later became Laurens District), SC, by John Montgomery. To this union 8 children were born. (The names of those listed above were detailed in his application for a pension based on his Revolutionary War service). Other possible children: Talbot (c. 1795 SC - ); Jesse (c. 1805 - ); and Abner Adkins (c. 1806 Knox Co., KY - ).

Some time between 1803 - 1808, they moved to TN, then later to Whitley Co., KY where he had lived for the past 25 - 30 years when he applied for his service pension. He was a farmer in Whitley Co., KY and owned over two hundred acres of land there on Cane Creek.

Find A Grave Memorial # 86078480. Burgess Siler, a neighbor who lived about 1/2 mile from the Adkins family, took their measurements when they died and made their caskets.

Article from the News Journal, Whitley Co., KY, September 4, 2013: "Revolutionary War soldier's resting place cleaned - On August 20, the Whitley County Cemetery Board and the inmates from the Whitley County Detention Center cleaned the final resting place of Revolutionary War Soldier Thomas Adkins who died in 1845. This cemetery, very overgrown, sits on a hill at the Sandy Flats Rail Road Crossing. Roy Siler said they encountered one green snake, three yhellow jackets' nests, and one lawn mower caught fire. About ten new graves were discovered when a grown up section was cleared in this cemetery. Over 100 graves lie in this cemetery, some only with field stone markers. A local resident, Dewey Brown,....said he would try to help maintain this cemetery....We urge everyone in the community to please help keep these graves clean, especially where Rev. War and Civil War Soldiers who fought for our freedom are buried.."
