

He was a member of the Nelson Education Board. He was a sawmiller at TJ & H Baigent in 1873 at Takaka. He & his brother Henry established the business in 1873. The plant was described as a vertical saw and iron travelling bench and a planing mill. The plant was powered by a Clayden and Shuttleworth sixteen horsepower engine and employed 12 persons and produced 3500 feet per day.
