About Thomas Berry
Note
Some researchers believe that the above Thomas Berry(Hannah Day) was a son of the William Berry who died in Hawkins Co, TN in 1823.William Berry’s 1823 will identified a wife named Sueanne and the following chidren:
Sons:Thomas Berry, Francis Berry, John Berry, William Berry
Daughters:Elizabeth (Berry) Walker,Rachel Berry, Sarah (Berry) Morland, Hannah Berry and Mary Berry.
Researchers believe that the above Francis Berry married Esther Day, a presumed sister or half sister of Hannah Day.This couple moved to Illinois where Francis died and the children migrated to Stone Co, MO.Sarah (Berry) Morland and her husband, Benoni Morland, migrated to Parke Co, IN.Elizabeth (Berry) Walker was married to Edward Walker, residing in the Bulls Gap area of Hawkins Co, TN.Closely associated with the WALKERs in Bulls Gap were a significant number of BERRY families who may or may not be descended from the sons John or William Berry identified in William Berry's 1823 will. There was also an early Thomas Berry residing in the Bulls Gap area of Hawkins.
Since there was ‘a’ Thomas Berry residing in the Bulls Gap area of Hawkins, I am unable to confirm that the Thomas Berry (married Hannah Day) who died in the Lee Valley area was a son of the William Berry who died in 1823 in Hawkins Co, TN.I can only confirm the T. Berry/H. Day children at this point.
Note
Thomas Berry (ca 1780/85? - d. 1832/36, Lee Valley, Hawkins Co, TN) m. Hannah Day 3 Nov 1806.One of their well-documented present-day descendants has participated in BERRY Y-DNA testing and is a 36/37 DNA match to one of the well-documented Augusta/Rockbridge/Washington Co, VA BERRYs.Many researchers, including Hobert Berry, had long believed that the Hawkins BERRYs were somehow connected to the Augusta BERRYs, although there was NO documentation showing such a connection. While it is not yet known how the two groups are connected, the DNA results are positive proof that a very close familial relationship existed.Research is on-going to see if a good paper trail can be established.
Known children of Thomas Berry/Hannah Day are:
Sarah Berry (b. ca 1807 - ?)m. ca 1830 Benjamin Atkinson
William Berry* b. ca 1810-1888 m. [1] Frances Willis* [2] Margaret Mabe* [3] Eliza Lawson
Esther Berry (b. ca 1810/20 - ? ) m. ca 1835 Robert McGee
Jesse D. Berry* (b. 1819 - 1864) m. 7 Jun 1839Martha Jane Willis
Mary E. Berry (b. 1828 - 1919 Hancock Co, TN) m. ca 1847 Alfred Greene
John D. Berry* (b. ca 1832 - 1885) m. 27 Aug 1851 Lucinda Berry**
[*William, Jesse D, and John D. all died in Lee Valley, Hawkins Co, TN.It is not know where the Atkinson and McGee families migrated. Also the Willis & Mabe marriages for William Berry are unconfirmed, but are reasonable speculations at this point.
- *Lucinda Berry, b. ca 1830 in Washington Co, VA, was a daughter of James R. Berry/Elizabeth Faires.DNA results show no relationship between the BERRY/FAIRES descendants and the Hawkins or Augusta BERRYs, however, severalBerry/Faires descendants also resided in the Lee Valley area of Hawkins.]
