Mustered in Co B 4th Iowa Cavalry Nov. 23, 1861. Promoted to 8th Corporal (date not reported); 3rd Sergeant Aug 1, 1862; 2nd Sergeant Jan 1, 1863. Reenlisted and remustered Dec 12, 1863. Reappointed 2nd Sergeant Jan 1, 1864. Promoted to 2nd Lieutenant Mar. 1, 1864; 1st Lieutenant Sept. 28, 1864. Mustered out with Company Aug. 8, 1865 at Atlanta, Georgia. Served in the field throughout the war, often in command of the Company.
