b. before December 1760, educ. Writer HEIC 1778, posted to Fort St George, Madras, transferred to Bengal Civil Service 1770, Head Assist. & Registrar Burdwan 1784-1794, Berhampore 1794, Actg. Political Agent 1805-1806, Senior Judge Court of Appeal at Bareilly 1808-1816, retd. 1817. Granted the titles of Mumtaz ud-Daula, Amir ul -Mulk, Bahadur, and Hizabr Jang by the Mughal Emperor. m. (second?, but probably his only legal wife) at Bhagalpore, Bengal, 1st February 1793, Anna Maria (b. ca. 1773; d. at Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, 24th September 1843, bur. Parish Church of St Thomas à Becket, Widcombe, Bath), adopted daughter of Lieutenant-Colonel The Hon. James Stuart, 1st Regt. Foot Guards, who was killed at the Battle of Guildford, North Carolina in 1781, and natural daughter of his elder brother, Colonel The Rt. Hon. William (Stuart), 9th Lord Blantyre, of a Scottish regiment in the service of the United Provinces of the Netherlands, by Harriet Teasdale. He d. at Widcombe, Bath, Somerset, 30th November 1835 (bur. there at the Parish Church of St Thomas à Becket), having had issue, including two sons and eight daughters:
