JOHN THOMAS CARNES (JOHN2, ALEXANDER1DE CAIRNS/CARNYS) was born Bet. 1650 - 1665 in Catamonhan, Ireland, and died 1735 in New Haven, CT.He married MARY BROWN April 30, 1687 in New Haven, CT, daughter of JOHN BROWN and MARY WALKER.

Notes for JOHN THOMAS CARNES:
He is said to be disinherited because, being of Scottish ancestry, he refused to fight the Irish for the English, an act of treason and a hanging offense. He may have been disinherited to protect him.
(Communication from Dr. Donald Carnes, Marietta, GA)

Thomas Carnes shared in the division of the common land in Foxon's, East Haven. Received his portion on March 27th, 1718.

Captain in British army during reign of King Charles II, put down the Catholics in Ireland. He resented having to do this. He thought the reign of James II would be better since he was a Catholic, but finally had to defect against his family's advice. He was disowned by his family to protect themselves, since desertion was a treasonable offense. The captain of the ship he came to America on advised him to marry a daughter of a well positioned bar keeper named Brown, which he did.

A John Carnes from Scotland also came to Boston about 1649 and was a Captain of Artillery there.Thomas Carnes let people assume he was a son of this John Carnes to protect himself from suspicion.

More About JOHN THOMAS CARNES:
Emigration: 1680, Cork, Ireland to New Haven, CT
7. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Carnes-39 :
I have found references that he fled to New Haven, Connecticut due to his refusal to join the King's Army against the Irish. Purported to have fled from Catamonhan, Ireland.
